Perfectly Crazy by Mitzi Penzes Review

Perfectly CrazyPerfectly Crazy by Mitzi Penzes

My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Goodreads: Sexy, stylish and successful, Nell always prided herself on her common sense. So why is she suddenly crazy for David, her married best friend of twenty years? With a single kiss, Nell's perfect Californian life turns upside down. All the safety of her well-adjusted marriage to a respected plastic surgeon and her growing fashion business pale in comparison to the passion experienced in that kiss. Can she go on as before, or will she make the biggest change of her life? Will she face disaster and tragedy, or perhaps adventure and a second chance? Or possibly both? Find out from this fast paced book where the sceneries are changing as fast as the movies. Life is full of surprises and challenges that anyone would call perfectly crazy yet they may become reality one day. Or will they?

My take: Warning: Lots of spoilers!

So basically middle aged Nell who already has a charmed life just gets everything she thought she ever wanted with absolutely no consequences. Her good marriage starts to teeter when her best friend, David, kisses her and they proclaim their everlasting love to each other and have amazing sex because David worships the ground she walks on and tells her all the time how much he loves her and idolizes her. David's marriage is on the rocks because his wife, Julie, wants a baby so badly that David feels objectified but he wouldn't feel that way with Nell, he tells her.

Next Jack, Nell's accomplished doctor husband admits he might be ill and wants to take a trip with her. They settle on Hawaii next Monday. That's right. This highly accomplished plastic surgeon who is probably scheduled out months in advance, clears his calendar on a whim and flies off for a week with his wife.

In the meantime, Nell is working on her very own fashion business which is exceedingly successful and jets off to Paris whenever she needs to. This, being her second career since she is also a certified medical doctor. Okay, seriously? A woman who paid tens (hundreds?) of thousands of dollars to became an M.D. throws it all away for a career in fashion?

Then Jack dies. Now Nell is free to pursue David. David is still completely in love with Nell and Nell grieves over Jack for all of a minute and a half before the new relationship is revealed and everybody is happy about it except Julie. Julie however, is a bitty so she deserves it. But everybody is supportive and the sex is fantastic and David is successful and life is simply charmed.

And so it continues.

This is the middle-aged woman's self-indulgent fantasy of starting over with a new love. Someone who has never seen her after a morning of throwing up with morning sickness or all the crud giving birth. This is a story that love conquers all and a middle aged woman is desired, lusted after, loved unconditionally, and sex with her is life changing. It's a teenage fantasy for a forty year old woman and completely irrational and immature.

The truth is that Cinderella eventually gains weight, her boobs sag and she has children. Children that need parenting even after their sixteenth birthday. In fact, when children are left because the surviving parent leaves for Paris for weeks or months at a time, Division of Children Services will step in and provide a guardian. Prince Charming who proclaims love and devotion may have an affair. He may lose interest. I guarantee he is not going to be 100% attending Cinderella for the rest of her life.

This sounds perfectly dreadful. How many stars did Goodreads give it?
