Faery Tales and Nightmares by Melissa Marr
I hated the short story units during high school. They were weird. I think the fact that I enjoy well written short stories so much today is a testament that I have, indeed, grown up as a reader. Reiteration - well written short stories.
Marr accomplishes well written short stories. She lost me on the first one that was only a couple of pages long but the rest were entirely enjoyable, if not slightly disturbing. I think that was part of the allure for me. I really did love the selchie story best, although I'd known them as silkies.
The stories were about mythical creatures and included not only their draw but their dangers. The stories were short, clear, concise and provided just enough at the end to wonder what would happen. I kind of hoped there would be a part II of the stories.
The second half of the book befuddled me. This is not the fault of the author. It is a continuation of the world Marr created in her Wicked Lovely series which I am not caught up with. Okay, I read the first one then jumped into the next big thing. My apologies. End result is that I didn't finish this part. But I can recommend the short stories. Marr is gifted in writing shorts.
